Quality of Life of Patients with Cardiovascular Disease at the Geriatric Outpatient Clinic of Anutapura Hospital, Palu

Abstract

Background: Cardiovascular disease remains a major global health burden, including in Palu City, with a high prevalence among the geriatric population that risks reducing their quality of life. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the quality of life of cardiovascular patients at the Geriatric Polyclinic of RSUD Anutapura Palu and to analyze the influence of demographic and clinical factors (age, gender, and duration of illness) on their quality of life. Methods: A quantitative study with a cross-sectional design was conducted on 102 geriatric patients (60 years old). The Short Form-12 (SF-12) instrument was utilized to measure the Physical Component Summary (PCS) and Mental Component Summary (MCS) scores. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and independent t-tests. Results: The findings indicated that the patients' overall quality of life was in the moderate category. There were no significant differences in either PCS or MCS scores based on the duration of illness (p > 0.05) and gender (p > 0.05). However, a significant difference was found in the physical component (PCS) based on age categories, specifically between the young-old and middle-old groups (p = 0.006), whereas the mental component (MCS) showed no significant difference (p = 0.703). Conclusion: Age is a significant determinant of physical quality of life in geriatric patients with cardiovascular disease, while the duration of illness and gender do not exert a meaningful influence.
